The Most Beautiful Alleys of San Miguel de Allende: A Tourist Guide

17 April, 2023

Hello! Are you planning to visit San Miguel de Allende, one of the most beautiful and charming cities in Mexico? If so, I have a special recommendation for you: don’t miss the most beautiful alleys of this colonial city! In this post, I will tell you which alleys I liked the most and how you can enjoy them to the fullest.

San Miguel de Allende is famous for its historic architecture, artistic and cultural ambiance, delicious cuisine, and pleasant climate. But what captivated me the most about this city were its alleys, those corners full of magic and color that transport you to another time. The alleys of San Miguel de Allende are the perfect setting for taking incredible photos, admiring the beauty of the houses and gardens, discovering original shops and galleries, or simply strolling leisurely and being surprised by what you find at every corner.

There are many alleys to explore in San Miguel de Allende, but I will recommend the ones that I liked the most and that I think you cannot miss. These are:

  • Callejón del Chorro: This is one of the most famous and oldest alleys in the city. It is called that because at its end, there is a fountain that springs from the hill. Here you can see the Casa del Mayorazgo de la Canal, an 18th-century mansion that is now a museum, and the Chapel of Santa Cruz del Chorro, a small church with a baroque façade. The alley is full of flowers, plants, and pots that give it a very picturesque touch.
  • Callejón de los Suspiros: This is one of the most romantic alleys in San Miguel de Allende. It is said that it owes its name to the sighs that were heard when lovers said goodbye in this place. The alley is very narrow and has a staircase that goes up to the hill’s viewpoint. From here, you have a spectacular view of the city and the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the most emblematic symbol of San Miguel de Allende.
  • Callejón del Pueblito: This is one of the most colorful and cheerful alleys in the city. Here you can find a variety of shops and galleries that sell crafts, jewelry, clothing, books, and much more. There are also cafes and restaurants where you can try typical food or have a coffee while enjoying the ambiance. The alley has an arch with a clock that gives it a very special touch.
  • Callejón del Cardo: This is one of the most peaceful and elegant alleys in San Miguel de Allende. Here you can admire the colonial architecture and the white facades with red and blue details. The alley ends at the Plaza del Cardo, where you can find the Church of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri, a jewel of Mexican baroque. There is also a crafts market where you can buy souvenirs and gifts.

These are just some of the most beautiful alleys of San Miguel de Allende, but there are many more that I invite you to discover on your own. I assure you that you will fall in love with this city and its magical corners. Have a good trip!
