León, Gto. — On May 31 and June 1, León becomes the capital of Guanajuato’s culinary identity as it hosts the 13th edition of the Guanajuato Sí Sabe! Traditional Cuisine Gathering.
Organized by the Guanajuato Ministry of Tourism, this annual event is a celebration of the flavors, stories, and traditions that have shaped the state’s gastronomy—recipes passed down through generations, cooked in clay pots, and flavored with pride.
This year, the event brings together cooks from every corner of the state. Prior to arriving in León, organizers visited four regions—Valleys, North, Northeast, and South—to select dishes and cooks that reflect the essence of each territory. The result is a rich showcase of authentic cuisine that captures the diversity of Guanajuato’s culinary heritage.
The León Fairgrounds will transform into an open-air kitchen, where visitors can witness traditional dishes being prepared on-site: tamales, enchiladas, gorditas, moles, fermented beverages, traditional sweets, and more. Rare ingredients like garambullo berries, native pasilla chiles, heirloom corn, xoconostle, maguey, and aromatic herbs will take center stage.
In addition to food tastings, the program includes cooking workshops led by traditional cooks, expert talks, cultural performances, and family activities. One of the highlights will be the final competition, where selected cooks will present their signature dishes to a panel of chefs, historians, academics, and tourism leaders.
More than a contest, this event offers well-deserved visibility to the people who keep culinary traditions alive—not only through their food but through the stories they carry.
Admission is free and open to the public.
From Guanajuato Travel, we invite you to take a trip to León—on your own, as a couple, with friends or family—and discover the deep, flavorful soul of Guanajuato through its traditional cuisine.
